Purpose:

Dedicated to bringing single people together for the enjoyment of sailing, cruising, social and educational experiences.

Meetings:

Meetings are held on the second Friday of each month (except for December). A short business agenda is followed by an entertaining and informative program on some topic related to sailing.

Afterwards, Our DJ provides music for dancing. Others may choose to visit around the (cash) bar, where sailing contacts may be made.

Background Information:

We are a non-profit organization founded in 1980. Sailing Singles membership numbers in the hundreds, comprised of single men and women who join because of a mutual interest in sailing. You must be single to join. In addition, some married couples who met at the club remain as associate members.

There is a one-time initiation fee of $10.00. Annual dues are $40.00, payable between April 1 and June 1. Persons joining will charged a prorated amount.

A membership roster is mailed each year. This is a valuable source of skippers and crew. A monthly newsletter with current and future events is available to members which keeps the membership up to date on current activities

Members pay a nominal fee for meetings and activities. Guests are welcome, but pay a slightly more than members.

Sailing Singles is managed by a nine-member board, elected yearly by the membership and aided by a number of active committees.

Fleet:

While Sailing Singles, as a club, owns no boats, many members (known as skippers) own sailboats and power boats of all classes and sizes. Starting in the spring of the year 2001, two Flying Scots were made available to Sailing Singles members through an  arrangement with The Detroit Boat Club. See : The flying Scot Page

These skippers welcome club members as crew on their vessels and appreciate help in preparing their boats for launch and winter storage. Both experienced and inexperienced sailors are welcome.

The membership roster list boat owners who may be contacted when you wish to join them on the water. A skipper list is published in a spring issue of The Anchor Line newsletter and a current list of skippers can be accessed from the web.

Rendezvous: Half a dozen weekend rendezvous are held each season, beginning with a 3-day Memorial Day weekend get-together at a nearby American or Canadian port and continuing every 3 or 4 weeks through late September. The majority of the rendezvous are Saturday-Sunday events located close enough so that members who prefer to drive can join in the dinner and activities.

Education:

Formal education seminars are held each spring in classrooms and on the water for any member to get acquainted with the club and sailing techniques. We emphasize safety and encourage further training through the U.S. Coast Guard, United Stated Power Squadron and county Sheriff departments.

Formal Events:

The Commodore's Ball and Christmas Party are both semi-formal events with dinner and live bands. These parties are usually held at a yacht or country club.

Activities:

Sailing Singles events are as varied as the people who comprise the membership. We hold Happy Hours at various bars and restaurants around town. An annual dinner honors the skippers who, together with their boats, make this club possible. Many members attend the annual Blessing of the Fleet at Mariner's Church. One or more ski trips provide fun in the off season.

Social Events have included parties for The Super Bowl, Valentines Day, Halloween, and The Festival of Lights. A Chili Cook-off has been a highly competitive event. We have gorged on lobster and ethnic food, enjoyed champagne brunches and picnics.

Sailing Singles members are physically active. There have been canoe trips, white-water rafting, tennis matches and whirlyball. Some members have organized bare-boating in the Virgin Islands, Bahamas, Greek Islands and the Sea of Cortez. Each summer skippers take quite a few members to the North Channel and Georgian Bay.

If these activities and the camaraderie of sailing appeal to you, if you have a boat to share or just enjoy the water, come to one of our meetings. Or check out our events on-line. If you want to contact us click here. We promise you sunny skies, fair winds, memorable moments and many new friendships!
